The two decide to elope, but midway through the plan, Titli has a change of heart — she realises it would be unfair for their parents to bear the consequences. They want to be together, but not at the cost of their families’ peace and happiness.
Usually quite irresponsible, Ranjan makes a promise — he’ll secure a government job within two months. It’s the only condition set by Titli’s father. Carefree as ever, the couple turns to their usual jugaad and somehow manages to make things work. But just when everything seems on track, Ranjan finds himself caught in a time loop, one that keeps stopping him from reaching his wedding day.
Rajkummar Rao has recently done a few films set in small-town backdrops, and Bhool Chuk Maaf follows suit — though with a mix of fresh elements and familiar templates. Certain nuances in the writing stand out. While the film’s family dynamics and quirky characters might remind you of the Bareilly Ki Barfi-style North Indian flavour, it still manages to carve out its own identity.
Take Ranjan’s equation with money, for instance — it’s shaped by his father’s (Raghubir Yadav) complete financial dependence on his wife (Seema Pahwa), who runs a pickle business and is the sole breadwinner. Her husband doesn’t see anything unusual about this arrangement. Similarly, Ranjan casually spends Titli’s money, which she borrows from her parents, and doesn’t feel the need to be financially independent — until circumstances leave him with no choice.
The first half takes its own sweet time to come to the point, with a flurry of songs thrown in without much reason or relevance. The humour stays largely clean and harmless, barring the occasional ‘tatti joke’.
It’s the second half where the film truly finds its footing. This is where it begins to reflect on issues like growing apathy, isolated lifestyles, and a self-centred way of living. It raises pertinent questions — what impact does our constant jugaad have on society, and when did we stop caring?
The social commentary, delivered through humour, feels fresh and well thought-out. You just wish it didn’t take almost an hour to get there.
Acting stalwarts like Seema Pahwa, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Mishra, and Zakir Hussain are in top form, and their presence brings depth and authenticity to the film’s setting. Wamiqa Gabbi does a fine job portraying her quirky yet fearless character with charm and confidence.
As for Rajkummar Rao — a performer of great calibre — he deserves roles that challenge him and push his limits. Bhool Chuk Maaf doesn’t quite offer that. Even so, he plays Ranjan with sincerity, embracing the character’s flaws and emotions wholeheartedly.
Bhool Chuk Maaf delivers a relevant message in a subtle, almost deceptive way. The time loop may sometimes feel like watching multiple behind-the-scenes retakes. If you’re willing to go along with it, this film is definitely worth a watch.
